Major Technologies Used:

Challenges: One of the oldest and largest publishing houses in Europe, and a leading provider of textbooks, the client faced the growing threat of piracy. To address this and better serve students, they launched a subscription-based streaming service offering unlimited textbook access. We played a key role in designing and implementing the core system, managing sign-ups, user authentication, product subscriptions, payments, and integrations with various existing and in-house systems. This work also included integration with a modern front-end developed by a separate company. Adding to the complexity, the entire platform, from design to delivery, had to be completed within a tight seven-month timeframe.
Our Solution: Our engineering efforts focused on several key areas. We designed and developed a REST API to integrate a third-party payment system. This API served as a clean, business-centric interface, abstracting the complexities of various underlying services for both the frontend and other integrated systems. To manage data flow, we designed and developed new data pipelines, seamlessly integrating them with the client’s existing infrastructure. This involved creating new databases and implementing 24/7 monitoring jobs to track changes within a third-party product information management system. Furthermore, we integrated and enhanced the client’s existing authentication system to support system-based user profile properties. Finally, we built a platform from the ground up to asynchronously process and deliver user operations to a third-party emailing provider, facilitating marketing campaigns and newsletters.
