Challenges: The client provide affordable and effective test prep and tutoring to students in the Los Angeles area. By partnering with schools and nonprofits, they’re working to level the playing field in college admissions for students from underserved communities.
The client’s current manual data analysis and student progress tracking methods created inefficiencies in lesson planning and limited tutor responsiveness. This project sought to overcome these challenges, including a lack of tutor autonomy and difficulties with lesson continuity when substitutes were needed. The goal was to streamline processes, empower tutors, and improve adaptability for enhanced educational outcomes.
Our Solution: To streamline processes and ensure secure, digital data management, we designed user-friendly interfaces and developed a web application that also facilitated faster onboarding. Designers collaborated with marketers on brand research to ensure visual elements were both appealing and consistent with the brand’s identity. The platform used React with TypeScript for a modern, responsive frontend, featuring distinct portals for different roles: an Admin Portal for overseeing courses and classes across schools; a Staff Portal for facilitating organizational communication and operations; and a Tutor Portal for tracking and managing student progress. A robust and scalable API, built with Ruby on Rails, handled data on the backend, with PostgreSQL providing secure data storage.
Simplifying Access of Genetic Testing for Cancer and Cardio-Vascular Risks

Challenges: The primary challenge lay in simplifying access to genetic testing for cancer and cardiovascular risks. The complex testing process, reliant on scheduling appointments with healthcare providers, resulted in delays and increased costs. These access barriers presented cumbersome processes that deterred patients from obtaining necessary health information. Furthermore, ensuring data privacy and meeting HIPAA regulations for Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI) posed a significant hurdle.
Our Solution: To address these challenges, we developed a secure, mobile-first web application. This application streamlined booking by enabling users to order genetic tests online without needing a doctor’s appointment. We implemented a system for immediate online approval of Picture Wellness tests from Fulgent Genetics, facilitating quick approvals. The user journey was simplified through step-by-step guidance, providing clear instructions at every stage. Critically, we ensured regulatory compliance by encrypting all PII and PHI to meet HIPAA standards. Data transfer was secured using the HTTPS protocol, and we implemented best practices for managing environment secrets to ensure sensitive data was securely stored.
This application delivered significant improvements in user accessibility and health outcomes. It reduced the time and effort required for ordering tests, leading to efficient test booking. The application also increased awareness of genetic risks associated with cancer and cardiovascular health, broadening public understanding. Ultimately, it enhanced health outcomes by enabling timely access to genetic testing, promoting proactive health management and contributing to better overall results.
